Under the hood

Here's how I work

  1. Undying Curiosity

    The day I no longer yearnto learn more about the world is the day I check in to retirement. And I don't feel remotely fulfilled yet. Because of the experiences spawned from this curiosity, I'm just as adept speaking with engineers as I am with lawyers, investors, CEOs and end-users.

  2. Generalist by Nature

    I can come up with the idea, plan it, execute it, test it, sell it, ship it and evaluate the whole process over again. I can also step in or out of any one of those stages and either receive from or hand off to a specialist team member.

  3. For love of the game

    I love solving problems. If I don't know how something works, I seek the solution. If someone else brings such a challenge of their own, the motivation is twofold - I get the satisfaction of solving a problem for myself while pleasing someone else who's blessed me with the trust & confidencethat I could help them.

  4. What's next

    Most of society is blissfully unaware of the technological revolution unfolding in front of them. But wielding great ability comes with great responsibility, and I want to be a catalyst for helping to bring society's consciousness forward for both the opportunities and threats that the new frontier presents so they can meet it with hope instead of fear.

Jock Taxes

Answers questions about how cross-jurisdictional tax policy differences impact professional sports teams and players.

  1. The problem

    Every time free agency rolls around, social media is rife with commentary on how teams in low/no tax states have an unfair advantage in attracting players. But to what degree is this true for players picking a new home? The top-line number doesn't travel the same in every market after accounting for both resident and nonresident taxes in federal, state, and local jurisdictions.

  2. Factors & constraints

    The inputs are public schedules, reported contract structures, and domicile assumptions. Bonuses and filing status change the exposure. The results have to be shown in an easily digestible package while a signing is still news. Meanwhile, it must also offer transparency on the assumptions being made so that the results can be checked by others or corrected for alternative priors.

  3. The Process

    I treated the project as an empirical question and also as a decision system. Equivalent salary across teams, player movement scenarios, and venue-level tax flow are all part of a comprehensive tax model for explaining athlete compensation. I used models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta, xAI, and open-source projects to perform subject-matter research, design system architecture, define tax model covereage, iterate on the project code, and check outputs.

  4. What was created

    A Python tax engine estimates resident and nonresident federal, state, and local tax exposure for the NHL, NFL, NBA, and MLB, with interactive tools for various real-world scenarios. Now when someone wonders what tax advantage one team might have had over another in contract negotiations, we can actually quantify it and explain the "why" behind the numbers.

  5. Sharing results

    I repurposed an unused X account in order to share the data and the model exploration UI with the public. Publishing the analysis grew the @JockTaxes accountfrom single digit followers to over 11k in just a few days during the 2026 NHL free agency period. National sports media personalities, former players, player agents, CPAs, tax attorneys and more all expressed interest in the project, both publicly and privately.

  6. What's next

    I'm still building more tools. On deck are public APIs, MCP tools and a Contract Studio feature for adding tax factors into simulated contract negotiation scenarios. And throughout the process, I continue to add to my own understanding of the subject matter, both for my own benefit and to share with others. It really is a trip sharing this journey with tens of thousands of people but also reinforces the responsibility I have of putting forth the best work I can for the sake of those who follow.

Florida Parcel Map

With wide public data availability comes increased data variety - and not always in a good way. Something is needed to organize this mess so you can see the forest rhough the trees.

  1. The problem

    Florida has very transparent public data laws that apply to all levels of government, but not all jurisdictions have the same abilities and preferences in presenting it. Quality and accessibility differ greatlyacross more than 200 municipal and public sources.

  2. Factors & constraints

    The original sources do not always share a common shape or quality standard. The system must standardize and enrich the data in such a way that we're not merely repackaging data that's already available elsewhere, but adding real insights by giving users the tools to use the data how they see fit.

  3. The Process

    Data ingestion, cleaning, and creation of custom data structures all come first. Then I iterated on various feature-engineered valuation models with scikit-learn and XGBoost using both quantitative and qualitative data, and guided by real domain knowledge. Then the models are ready to interact with continuously updated real world data within our custom map UI.

  4. What was created

    Florida Parcel Map, at floridaparcelmap.com. It is a comprehensive solution for accessing and analyzing Florida property data.

  5. What's next

    As we see more business operators choosing to ditch the subscriptions and harness AI to build their own bespoke tools, I want to open a public API to the more proprietarily engineered features so that business operators and investors can integrate these resources into their own internal tools.

How I approach problems

  1. Define it

    "Hmmm, that's interesting. I need to know more about this." - That's the start of nearly every project.

  2. Model the solution path

    Does this simply require that I seek out an expert in the subject or will I be more fulfilled in self-directed exploration on the topic?

  3. Execute plan, adjust as needed

    It may start as a sprint toward a goal, but reality usually takes you in directions you didn't expect. Be flexible and willing to pivot.
